it's all gone to pants

Well it has reached the end of January and in this month I have managed to knit one and a bit scarfs, one pair of gloves, crochet some more granny squares and made a pair of pants (knickers, panties, whatever you want to call them) hence the title!

The a bit scarf

This is the pompom yarn scarf as it currently stands, I'm finding it hard going knitting with this sort of yarn, well let's say I won't be rushing out to buy more. As for the rib scarf and the gloves they are still in the to finish pile waiting for me to find some motivation to do some finishing, which is not yet! So I decided that I needed  a break from it and I haven't done my make one item of clothing a month resolution yet, so I thought what's small and quick?

It's pants isn't it!

Yes pants (knickers, panties), I remembered that I had got a free make your own kit with a copy of Simply Sewing magazine a little while ago.

Ta dah!

Looked pretty easy to make, everything needed to make is included in the envelope all I need to do find is some matching thread and trace the pattern pieces off the pattern sheet.
So off I went traced pattern pieces, cut said pieces out fabric and started sewing first put the gusset in, followed by the side seams. Then the tricky bit,  the elastic I won't lie this is not the easiest of thing to do. When it comes to putting elastic in thing I'm more use to making a waistband like with a simple skirt or pyjama bottoms and then feeding the elastic through the channel in the waistband easy.
Not this method, first I'm told to set my sewing machine to zigzag stitch (easy), cut the elastic into three pieces, two the same length for the legs and a longer length piece for the waist (easy) and then the not so easy bit attaching the elastic.Well let's say I struggled, there was quite a bit of swearing a lot of unpicking, but I persevered and eventually did it and the results are!

They look like pants to me

But I will say they are not the best made pants in the world and they do have some flaws,

Oh no!

Oh yes a gap in the elastic, well it is my first attempt at doing elastic like this!

Ouch!

And holes too! Must of acurred during the swearing unpicking session, well I don't think I will be winning any prizes with these! But what I have learned from this is when trying a new skill it is always best to practice and have a few trial runs before doing the real thing.
